Renewing your UAE business license is a compulsory annual step that keeps your company legally active, protects your bank relationships, and ensures visa and contract continuity. Whether you are a mainland, free zone, or offshore company, operating without a valid license is illegal and can lead to fines, suspension, or worse.
Your trade license is the legal basis of your company’s existence. If it expires, you cannot legally carry out business activities, issue invoices, or process visas. Not renewing the license but still continuing business activity is illegal and exposes the company to regulatory action.
All UAE companies must renew their trade license and, where applicable, the establishment card (also called the immigration card or Establishment Card issued by the relevant authority). Failing to renew the establishment card can also attract penalties and complicate employee visa processing.
Under each category, the core idea is similar: keep your tenancy or address proof updated, clear all dues, and submit the renewal application before expiry.
Mainland businesses typically renew through the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and related emirate-level authorities. The process usually requires valid tenancy documentation and activity-based approvals where applicable.
Free zone companies renew through their own free zone authority, such as MEYDAN, IFZA, SPC, DMCC, DAFZA, JAFZA, or others. The process is similar in principle but uses zone-specific portals and packages.
Offshore companies in the UAE are also required to be renewed every year, even though they do not typically hold a physical office or Ejari. Instead, they must maintain a registered agent address and comply with the relevant offshore authority’s annual requirements.
Government renewal costs vary by jurisdiction, activity, and office type, but you can use rough ranges for planning. Mainland commercial renewals often start from around AED 15,000+ depending on activity, approvals, and office size. Free zone renewals can range from approx. AED 5,000–20,000+ based on the package, office type, and number of visas.
Offshore Business license renewals are usually lower but still significant enough to disrupt cash flow if ignored. Typical offshore annual renewal and registered agent fees can range from approx. AED 10,000, depending on the jurisdiction and service provider.
Some business activities require additional approvals or permits from external authorities either before business license renewal or before resuming operational work after renewal. Examples include health, education, food, transport, and other regulated sectors. These approvals are separate from the license itself but must be in place to operate legally.
Ignoring these approvals can mean your license is renewed on paper, but you still cannot legally operate until the permits are issued.
If you do not renew on time, penalties and fines can start and may increase over time. Beyond the monetary cost, late renewal can lead to suspension of services, blocked visa transactions, and scrutiny from compliance bodies. In serious cases, authorities may suspend or cancel the license.
Continuing to trade or operate while the license is expired or suspended is illegal and can result in heavy fines, legal action, and reputational damage.
Most authorities allow you to start renewal before the expiry date, and many recommend starting at least 30 days in advance to sort out tenancy, approvals, and payments. Online portals are now the standard route for mainland, free zone, and offshore renewals, although some steps may still require document uploads or manual checks.
A sensible timeline is to check your expiry date, confirm your tenancy or address proof, clear any fines, and then submit the renewal application together with the establishment card renewal.
